WHITEWATER REGION (Beachburg) —
The Beachburg Horticultural Society celebrated their 60th anniversary on May 25 with 70 members and guests in attendance. A turkey dinner was catered by the Beachburg United Church women in the church basement hall.
After the meal, Lawrie Barton, Vice-President and Master of Ceremonies opened the meeting. The ceremonial cake-cutting was with Patsy Metzger cutting the cake, Lawrie Barton and Eleanor McLaughlin at her sides. Speeches were given by Sharlene Desjardin, Director of District 2 Horticultural societies and Hazel Hawthorne in remembrance of deceased members. Cassie Cooper for John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, presented a certificate of congratulations to President Metzger.
Blaine Marchand, guest speaker from Ottawa, is the author of eight books, six of which are poetry. His talk tailored along an interest in peonies was well received. As well as his overall interest of horticulture, he is on the Board for the Bromley Historical Society.
The meeting was concluded with the recognition of long-time members by Mr. Marchand and Ms. Metzger.
