RENFREW: In celebration of National Seniors Day on Monday, October 1, Bonnechere Manor was the host for an exciting networking opportunity exclusively for long term care homes and their Behavioural Support Outreach Teams within Renfrew County. This one-day workshop provided knowledge exchange through formal presentations, team sharing of successes and challenges, and learning from each other. Objectives of the day included:

 1)     Forum to present strategic planning for a sustainable BSO model of care

2)     Policy sharing/best practices

3)     Coordinated/collaborative approach for success

4)     Utilization of available resources

5)     Networking for success

More than 50 individuals came from Barry’s’ Bay, Deep River to Arnprior, with speakers from The Royal Ottawa and Geriatric Mental Health Services.

Bonnechere Manor has been identified by Geriatric Mental Health as one of the leading long term care homes within Renfrew County who have developed a Behavioural Supports Program that have in turn made a difference in the lives for those residents requiring dementia care living at Bonnechere Manor.

The team is led by Shelley Yantha, Director of Care.

This team has collaborated to ensure that the nursing model of care, the environment and life enhancement programming are supported by best practices and care plans reflect individual resident needs.

The utilization of non-pharmacological interventions and the strong partnership that has been developed with Geriatric Mental Health and psychiatric services have also been paramount to success, continuing to lower the use of anti-psychotics at Bonnechere Manor.
