Body of child recovered in Petawawa River

RENFREW COUNTY (Petawawa) — On Sunday August 25, at approximately 7:15 p.m. officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded after the body of a child was found floating in the Petawawa River adjacent to Summit Trail in the Town of Petawawa. The investigation found the child had slipped and entered the water while walking along the river with a friend, who then ran to get help.   

The body was spotted by an adult in the area who brought the child to shore and performed CPR until emergency services arrived. The child was transported to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics and was pronounced deceased. Foul play is not suspected and a post mortem will be conducted to confirm the cause of death which is suspected to be drowning. 

The deceased has been identified as seven-year-old Mason Ryan of Petawawa.
