Editor’s Note: I was not able to talk to Cameron Dube of BORCA (Beachburg Off Road Cycling Association) about Saturday’s Spring Chicken. However, there was a statement on BORCA’s facebook page, so I am publishing it here.

What a perfect day we had for the 2018 BORCA Spring Chicken.
It couldn’t happen without the dedication of the BORCA members and our volunteers or the 200-plus of you riders and runners who showed up in Beachburg to support the trails and our community! On behalf of BORCA – thanks.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there — those who raced, those who supported and to those who volunteered their time! Very much appreciated! And to Mother Nature, for being so kind this year!

Some notable mentions for the day: Firstly, Philippe Lanthier who was a lead in the 63km bike and missed a sign, doing a full second lap in the technical brewery trails and still coming out so strong to finish third. Incredible attitude and great sportsmanship. Chapeau Phillipe!

  1. To the young guns out there, the tweens and teens, who rode like champs on the 27km and 63km course. We think it’s time for a U17 category! Well done!
  2. Thanks to Sara Halland her team from Cranky Kids for hosting another super fun Chicken Chase Kids event. These little ones are the future Spring Chicken racers!

To our Course Sweepers, who trailed behind, slowly but surely to ensure safety. Our 63km sweepers were out for 7 hours — Christine Ficker, Mike Laska and Stephen Woodfine, you guys rock! To Kimberly MacLeanCari-lynn McSorley and Coralie Mackay on the 28km course! Thanks.

Thank You  to Hugh Martin, Lawrence Regier and Terry Moore, Township of Whitewater Region Volunteer Fire Department for leading us out along main street and blocking traffic, along with the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service (Curtis) for hanging out all day on course, ensuring safety.

In order for BORCA and the Spring Chicken to continue, we rely heavily on our land owners and partners. They are:
Wilderness Tours and RiverRun Rafting, and OWL Rafting on the Ottawa River. If you’ve never rafted the Ottawa, you’re missing out – big time.

Grants Settlement Farms for land use and some fine Maple Syrup! Check them out on Dittburner Road (63km course) or their website, grantssettlementfarms.ca.

The BORCA trails are for you all to enjoy, so c’mon out anytime and ride.
