The Council of the Township of Whitewater Region received a report for information purposes as it relates to an update on the rehabilitation of Cameron Street, Earl Street, and Vera Crescent project.

Manager Lane Cleroux said that the work had a ‘short construction season’ due to a requirement to not begin until after the school year and had to end by October 2022.

“There were a lot of challenges with road access.” he said. “There is only one road that provides access and only one water line that provides water to all the houses on those streets.”

He said that the existing road granules also delayed the process.

He said that most of the project complete, with culverts and “Asphalt removal, new granulars and paving on Cameron Street from Earl Street to Vera Crescent” still needing to be done.

“To date, eight change orders have been issued valued at $119,965.02.”

“The next steps will be communicating the projects status to residents, as well as the projects startup date and completion.” he said.

The project is slated to start May 8, and “to be completed in June ,and .”
“I’m concerned with the school being open and them doing the work then with the, i don’t want to say ‘dangerous operation’, but the operations that we heard about from Mr. Lance, where it wasn’t the safest. So why do we have do it when the school is in? Can’t we do it when the school is out or have someone watch them 24/7, because after why Mr Lance said, I’m really concerned about safety in that area.”

“School won’t be affected that much because the work is taking place after Earl Street, so the school won’t be as affected.” Cleroux said.

He said they had invited the school principal to their biweekly meetings on the construction and have documents the concerns from the residents.

“So is there going to be another school entrance past Cameron.”

There will be trucks traveling past Cameron, but there will be no work on Cameron.” Cleroux said.

He said that there would be updates for residents as well.

Mayor Nicholson recommended they make the school bus window a note for H&H where they can’t use Cameron.

Deputy Mayor Regier asked if the Township paid the cost for the changes, which Cleroux confirmed was the case.

Mayor Nicholson asked if there were penalties for H&H if they didn’t adhere to contract.”

Cleroux said that Council had voted to defer the construction, but if they were to miss their deadline there would be ‘liquidation penalties.”

The motion was carried.
