WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The Cobden and District Civitan Club honoured recipients at its Annual Charter Night on Saturday, May 4. It marked 45 years for the celebration and honours Civitan members for their commitment and dedication to serving and improving their communities through community service.

The event drew an attendance of approximately 80 people and was held in the upstairs portion of the venue. Friendships old and new echoed throughout, and the candle centrepieces flickered in their lanterns against the royal blue table runner. A special presentation was made for Civitan Ted Barron. He was awarded a Lifetime Membership for distinguished service throughout his 45 year membership with the club.

“I’ve always had a philosophy,” said Barron, after receiving his plaque. “If you have the ability to give your time to whatever … those are things you should take with you. As long as I am on this Earth, I will keep giving my time.”

President Fred Laderoute and Civitan Mary Moss (Civitan of the Year 2018) presented the Civitan of the Year award to Bob Porter, who accepted his plaque to grand applause. Porter is known for his great sense of humour and can be seen throughout the community actively participating in his extra-insulated boots. He is also the club secretary. Porter’s work with the medical bank was championed, as at any given time there are more than 60 items given out free of charge to those in need. The items include wheelchairs, walkers and crutches and Porter ensures all are in excellent working condition, organized and clean.

The recipient of Citizen of the Year was presented by Moss and President Laderoute to 94 year old Civitan Hazel Hawthorne. Her participation in a variety of organizations was highlighted, including the Beachburg Horticultural Society where she has been a member for over 50 years,  and her infamous reputation for never missing a meeting are just a few of the many reasons why Hawthorne was chosen for this award.

Presentations were also made for Service Chevrons and closing the evening with entertainment was Fifth Street band. The happiness was contagious. It was a true celebration of community and the first sun-filled day of Spring amidst the recent precipitation.

The Cobden Club was chartered on May 10, 1974 and is a part of the Civitan International Foundation of Canada. The Club focuses on and recognizes the development of good citizenship through the building of a volunteer organization dedicated to serving and improving their communities through community service.
