WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — A 21-year-old cyclist from Sherbrooke, Quebec spent a few minutes relaxing at Cobden Beach on Tuesday.
“I want to see my country,” said Julie Garant.
As a teenager, she had the idea to see the world. A few years ago, she decided before seeing the world, she should see her country. At first it was by train, but after recently graduating from college, decided to cycle across Canada.
Ms. Garant plans to be in Vancouver, BC by Oct. 1. She left her home on May 2 and was able to stay with family throughout her ride through Quebec. However, now she’ll be camping overnight and staying at motels when she decides to stop for a day or two.
She is journaling her trip and following a route from the Ontario Bicycle Touring Atlas.
Ms. Garant may be cycling by herself, but she does have a furry companion – a teddy bear who rides in the basket on the front of her bicycle.
Many people have talked to her along the way and she said they are surprised when she says she’s cycling alone.
Ms. Garant has cycled 1,330 kilometres since she left Sherbrooke, Que.
