WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Scouter Stacey Russell was happy to see how the members, and friends, of the 1st Cobden Scouting showed enthusiasm for the first Soap Box Derby held in a long time in Whitewater Region.
There were 16 participants and “it went really well,” she said.
“It was great to see the kids pushing themselves. They made their own (derby cars) with parents’ help,” she said.
Each had to be 30 inches wide and 60 inches long and had to have steering and brakes.
“They really went all out, they used their creativity (in their designs),” Scouter Russell said.
Designs included balloon power; a semi (tractor trailer); and tank while others were brightly painted in orange, purple and green.
The event was held this past Saturday at Logos Land, just east of Cobden, with plenty of family and friends to cheer on the racers.
“We are definitely going to do this again next year,” Scouter Russell said.
The top three racers were, Emerson Davis, Aaron Coulas and Jacob Coleman.
In best car design, the top three placings went to Gabriel Staigh, Kael Wattie and Wade Matheson.
Aaron Koumayan won People’s Choice.
Scouter Russell said there had been scouting in the area years ago, but it’s only come back within the last two to three years.
The next pack event is Scout Trees, which is taking place at Petawawa Forestry on Saturday, May 12.
“The kids are getting donations for planting trees,” she said.
The 1st Cobden Scouting weekly meetings come to an end in June, however, Scouter Russell said there will be one or two meetings and events held throughout the summer.
The pack will begin again in September.
There are three components to the Scouting pack: Beaver (ages five to seven); Cubs (ages eight to 10) and Scouts (ages 11 to 14).
Early registration this year is from May 15 to June 30 at a cost of $200, Scouter Russell said. On July 1, the cost goes up to $230. The money is used for a variety of things within the pack, including scouter training, programs and insurance.
Those who register early can participate in the meetings to the end of the June.
