Dear Readers,
Virginia O’Hanlon, eight years old, wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s newspaper The Sun. She asked, “please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?” Editorial writer Francis Church issued a quick response and it was printed as an unsigned editorial on September 21, 1897.
I want to celebrate childhood and this incredible time of year by publishing “Dear Santa” letters in Whitewater News. Families and teachers are able to send in letters to be published in the print editions leading up to Christmas and all of them will be featured online. Please include the child’s first name, age and area they live in.
You can send the letter, or a photo of the letter, by email to [email protected]. Alternatively, you can mail or drop off the letter at the following address: 2-40 Crawford Street, Cobden, Ontario, K0J 1K0. The bag for letters will be marked.
Every child who writes to Santa will enjoy the magical experience of receiving a reply. Send your letter by December 17 to get a response. Remember to include your full return address on your envelope or in your letter. Contact me and our news elves will get you answers to any of your questions. Delivery times of letters sent by mail cannot be guaranteed, due to the busy nature of the holiday season.
Merry Christmas!
Megan Chase, Editor
