COBDEN — A long-time council member was honoured for his community work in the township of Whitewater Region and the former Ross Township.
“I don’t know why I’m here,” he said after entering the council chamber Wednesday evening. “Hope (Dillabough, township deputy-clerk) called and asked me to come in tonight.”
Shortly after the meeting started, Mayor Hal Johnson said, “I have a presentation to make to a fairly special gentleman.
“Donnie Rathwell, can I get you to come forward.”
Mayor Johnson said on behalf of the township, Mario Sergio, Minister Responsible for Seniors, and Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell, “I am pleased to present the Senior of the Year Award to Donnie Rathwell.”
Mr. Rathwell has many outstanding contributions to his community after age 65. However, Mayor Johnson said, also before the age of 65.
“This is quite an honour for this council, especially as you were involved with Whitewater Region from its conception and the former Ross Township before that,” Mayor Johnson said.
Councillor Cathy Regier had the honour of presenting her father with the award.
“Congratulations dad on a job well done,” she said. “I’ll carry the torch the best I can.”
Mr. Rathwell thanked everybody for the award.
“I’m a little bit humbled about it because of all of the good work that the crew helped me through the years, no matter if it was at work, at council, or as warden, and in this building here, the staff, and the councils I’ve had to work with and yourself as road super.
“It is certrainly an honour to receive something like this,” he said. “There are so many other people who have done so much too.”
