Drivers reminded of traffic light rules

RENFREW COUNTY (Pembroke) — The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind drivers of the rules of the road involving flashing and blank traffic lights after traffic lights went into a flash cycle at some intersections in Pembroke on Wednesday morning September 18.

Drivers encountering a flashing red light must come to a complete stop and proceed through the intersection only when it is safe to do so. Drivers encountering a yellow – or amber – flashing light at an intersection must drive with caution when approaching and moving through the intersection.

Drivers may encounter blank traffic lights during an electrical power loss. In these situations drivers must yield the right-of-way to vehicles in the intersection and to vehicles entering the intersection from their right. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and to treat the intersection as they would an intersection with all-way stop signs.
