Whitewater Region Township council has opted not to respond to a letter that was sent in by email regarding damage to an electric wheelchair due to the condition of roads and sidewalks in the City of Cobden.

Mayor Jim Labow noted the letter was not signed, there is no real name, and there is reference to the City of Cobden, and there is no City of Cobden that he is aware of.

“I believe it’s a fishing expedition,” he said at Wednesday afternoon’s council meeting.

Chief administrative officer Christine FitzSimons said she has not yet responded to the letter, because she wanted guidance from council. While the letter refers to a person using a wheelchair, “the issue isn’t presented clearly and we don’t know who it’s from, unless their last name is yahoo,” she said, bringing chuckles from the council members.

It was agreed there would be no response from council to the letter-writer since there is no name.

“We’ve made it a practice not to respond to something that is not signed,” Ms. FitzSimons said.

Mayor Labow feels “further substantiation” regarding just what the issue is, is required from the letter writer as well.
