WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Local business owner Wendy Stone celebrated her first year of business with a sale over the weekend at Easy Elegance in the Village of Cobden. The store is larger than it appears, opening up to a variety of goods as you walk past the first area of women’s clothing. You’re greeted by smiling, friendly staff and a glistening jewellery display. To your right, the rooms continue to reveal even more treasures and two carefully decorated fitting rooms where words of encouragement are exchanged.
The store is located on Highway 17 and “is an amazing location” says Mrs. Stone. “Thanks to the highway traffic, we get to meet a lot of amazing people who are both from here and out of town.” To cater to her diverse clientele, and to avoid competing with other local businesses of the same niche, Mrs. Stone says it’s a conscious decision to bring in a variety of goods for her customers. The brand new “Kitchen Corner” contains chocolate made in Nova Scotia, treats for tea, Madawaska coffee, sauces and more.
“I try to stick with Canadian brands as much as possible,” said Mrs. Stone. She tries to carry all sizes and shapes of clothing, as well as a mix of classic and trendy pieces. She even carries a selection for men. The selection of kitchen ware is highlighted by a few brands, one being Little Creek Pottery from Cobden just down the road. She also carries Whitewater Premium Candle Company.
Mrs. Stone has lived in Cobden since public school and like most, moved away from the area for school and returned once she wanted to settle down. Her husband, Richard Stone, owns Richard’s Repair and Service on Cedarhaven Rd., is a teacher in Barry’s Bay and still finds time to be the store’s handyman. Mrs. Stone also proudly boasts about her staff Karen Campbell, Donna Lairar, Marlaine Wilson and Madison Boloskie. While small, Mrs. Stone says “they are the most reliable and fun group!”
These women give fashion and lifestyle advice to customers, help loved ones shop for gifts and help Mrs. Stone enjoy semi-retired life by allowing her to travel to see her two daughters. Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Campbell are best friends and were the maid of honour in each other’s weddings. Their customers describe them as energetic, friendly, and enjoy their shopping experiences. “This is a no pressure sales environment,” Mrs. Stone explained. “Customers are welcome to come in and look around. Just because you don’t need something today doesn’t mean you won’t one day. And when they do, I want them to be able to think of something they saw here.”
“This year has been better than expected,” said Mrs. Stone. “I’m so happy with the way the community has received us.” A draw was held over the weekend and Donalda Stevens won a Parkhurst Covi wrap, valued at $87; Bev Afelskiewon a RAPZ vest, valued at $75; Mary MacFarlane won a Q’Neel fashion piece, valued at $180; Cathy Coulas won a Gourmet Food basket, valued at $65; Doris McCann won a Joseph Ribkoff $100 Gift Certificate; Carol Parsons won a $100 Sympli Gift Certificate; Lois Keon won a Vin Rouge Summer pant, valued at $65; Isabel Tanguay won an Elle Necklace and Earring set, valued at $299; Linda Pettigrew won a $100 Joseph Ribkoff Gift Certificate; and Sue McLaren won a $150 SCAPA dress.
