Drive throughout Ontario, and there’s no way you are going to miss any of the municipal election signs.
Vote for this candidate for reeve, mayor, deputy-mayor, councillor, school board trustee. At almost every intersection, park, and people’s homes, these signs are littering our vision.
But, there is one area that should not be littered with these signs, and that is a cenotaph erected for a community to honour those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Yes, they died so we could have the right to vote, for freedom of speech, so we could have the way of life we do.
However, does that mean we have to erect these political signs where someone may go to remember a loved one who gave their life?
Driving throughout Whitewater Region, it was shameful to see candidates’ signs at the cenotaphs in Beachburg and Westmeath. Do the candidates have no respect for those who gave their lives, for those who may wish to go remember a loved one who sacrificed their life for our freedom?
Yes, there is a large patch of empty grass around the cenotaphs. And yes, the cenotaphs are only used once a year, which is close to Remembrance Day, which is after the election is over.
But, let us show respect to those men and women who cannot vote, but died ensuring we could vote.
