Change isn’t always welcome and there is a change coming to whitewaternews.ca.
The online edition of whitewaternews.ca will remain free while the copies picked up in stores each week will go from free to $1 each week starting with the Jan. 7, 2016 edition.
For 18 months, the paper has been free. The publisher and editor were hopeful the online edition would be sufficient for our readers. As the editor, I have discovered more people would like the hard copy. There is a cost to printing each week, which we have not charged our readers for.
Currently, the system we have is not fair — some people are paying for it so they are guaranteed a copy; some people have been able to get the paper for free as there are some left when they get to the store; and for others, the store personnel have agreed to set aside a copy for them.
I spoke with Publisher Joe Kowalski and he has agreed to print more copies and charge $1 for each copy. The store selling the copy will receive 50 cents from each copy sold.
The rest of the money will be used towards the paper’s expenses, which includes printing the paper and paying the editor.
Currently, I am paid for 45 hours a month. However, as many of you know, I put in many more than that. But, I consider the extra time as volunteer work.
I want, and need, people to submit articles, photos, letters to the editor, story ideas, sports results, etc. to me at [email protected]. If you do not have a way of emailing me, please call me, 613-646-7753 and we can make arrangements for pick up.
Not every article will get into the hard copy, but they all make it to the online edition.
As the editor, I am hopeful what is in the paper each week interests you in some way. This is not a newspaper in the sense of what we all think a newspaper is — stories printed on newsprint, has advertisements and more writers than just one.
whitewaternews.ca is four pages (most weeks) of stories I believe will interest those who are able to get a copy each week. I am happy with what I have provided each week for the readers of the hard copy.
If there is something you would like to see in your newspaper, please do not hesitate to contact me, [email protected] or call 613-646-7753.
