It’s reported on Page 1 that a 23-year-old man was charged for speeding. And, not only that, but stunt driving.
The two charges actually go hand-in-hand in this instance. The stunt driving charge is the norm now when caught going more than 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit.
The question is begging to be asked, so we will ask it — WHY would anyone need to travel at that speed? There’s a saying — Arrive Alive. We know this is used in conjunction with telling people not to drink and drive. But, it could also be used in any situation.
Oh, we all know people who speed and all have a good reason.
But, let’s think about this. Your reason could be you are running late for a dinner date, or meeting up with some friends, or picking the children up from child care.
However, there are dangers to speeding, and one of the most important to remember is it could cost you your life — or even someone else’s.
Each time there’s an accident on Highway 17, many people are quick to blame the highway, saying it’s because it’s not four-laned. Really…that’s your excuse? By this logic, there should be no accidents on any four-lane highways — and we know that’s not true.
Most times it’s driver error…whether it be speeding, texting, answering a phone, changing the radio station, eating or taking a drink of something (preferably non-alcoholic). It could be trying to sooth an upset child in the back seat or a bee sting.
We all know accidents can happen. Some are not avoidable, like the bee sting. But, those caused by speeding or texting or answering a phone call or eating and drinking can all be avoided.
This weekend summer officially arrives. Children are out of school. Families are on the roads more taking children to camp, or the babysitter, off for a family vacation or even just heading to work.
Let’s make sure no one has to endure a visit from the police advising of an accident, only to find out it was because someone was in a hurry to go somewhere.
Let’s keep our Highway 17, along with all our other roads as safe as we possibly can and Arrive Alive by slowing down.
