Every day we hear about someone diagnosed with cancer, fighting cancer or losing the battle to cancer. It’s difficult to imagine, if you haven’t been through it, but there is a wall you hit when you’ve heard the words: You have cancer. The doctor is all too familiar with the emotions that run across a patient’s face. You hear of people who leave their doctor’s office and drive around aimlessly for hours trying to understand what this means for them and their family. It’s the young children who may not understand what those words mean…or the adult children who do understand and probably wish they didn’t.
However, over the years, there have been so many advances in cancer care, that it’s no longer a death sentence. People go through radiation and/or chemotherapy and through God’s mercy are able to battle against the Big C and win. But, it comes at a hefty price tag. While going through the treatments, cancer patients still have bills to pay, whether it be for medical or living. While some people are fortunate to have friends and family to rally round them and help with expenses, there are those who aren’t as fortunate. And so, with the help of fundraisers for the Canadian Cancer Society, all people can receive help. Next year, a first fundraiser of its kind will be held in the Ottawa Valley. The 2016 Git’Er Done Mud Run will be held at Wilderness Tours near Foresters Falls. It’s six-kilometres of awesome trails, 16 extreme obstacles and tons of mud to walk, run, climb over and crawl under to get through to the finish line. The launch of this event was held last week at Wilderness Tours. Registration is now open and will be open right up until the morning of the event, which is May 28, 2016. That’s six months from now. That means you have time to get a team together and begin training.
What do you need to train for?
* climbing over walls
* crawling through mud
* running / walking through mud while being sprayed by a firehose
* walking across a muddy and slippery log
* and so much more!
While it sounds treacherous, remember, it’s all for fun. The idea isn’t to get hurt, but to get wet and muddy while having fun and raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. We are putting a challenge out there. We would like to see at least 700 people participate, whether as part of a team or individually. There is no limit to the number of people on a team. Let’s show we are supporters of those who are fighting the battle. Let’s see if we can get anyone over the age of 16 in Renfrew County and who is able to participate, sign up. Wouldn’t that be amazing? The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and heats of 50 people will be released every 30 minutes until the final heat has left the start line. That means 700 people could easily participate. Let’s do this, Renfrew County and beyond!!
