Recently, the Muskrat Watershed Council hosted a public meeting where researcher Rebecca Dalton released the results of her analysis of the polluted Muskrat Lake and its watershed.
In less than 90 minutes, she gave her report and answered questions.
The only question not asked was: Where were you?
There was less than 100 people at the event. Yet, there are hundreds of properties around the lake, and hundreds more in the watershed. It has taken years to pollute these waters and it will take many years to clean them up.
However, one has to wonder if people care. It was 90 minutes on a warm Saturday morning in the middle of summer. It was the only time there could be a proper gathering of the property owners. We know where the farmers were … working their fields.
The cottagers and home owners were probably enjoying the warm morning.
But, all of them could have taken less than a warm summer morning to find out what exactly is polluting the lake and work together to find a soultuion.
It won’t be a quick fix. But, with the poor showing of people … maybe there’s no need to fix it, because people just don’t care.
