DOUGLAS — The Renfrew County Plowing Match and Rural Family Festival is Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Barr Line near Douglas.
The Stewart family are the hosts while the Renfrew County Plowmen’s Association organizes the event.
“It’s a great day out to experience the new and old techniques of farming,” said association secretary Penny Rochon.
But, she stressed, it’s much more than farming.
There are displays, bands, a variety of food, vendors to check out and of course the tractor square dance, Kubota Excavator rodeo – which anyone can try – and so much more.
The KidsZone has returned, but, the obstacle course is larger this year and there’s an archery course set up.
There will be some farm animals on display, sheep shearing demonstrations and the 4H Rabbit Club will have various agility performances. Ted Richardson will be demonstrating his apple press and Tom Stephenson will be showing people how to make rope, even allowing them to make it and take it home.
New this year are an axe and chainsaw carvers.
There will be wagon rides to tour the site and an opportunity to watch plowing done with tractors and horses.
“We have quite a few horse plowmen attending this year,” Ms. Rochon said.
The opening ceremony is at 10 a.m. and on the main stage 5th Street is performing, she said. The Beachburg Fair Dining Hall Committee is providing the breakfast, while the Plowmen’s Association is providing the hot lunch, and there will be other food vendors as well, she noted.
The event happens rain or shine and is at 1975 Barr Line.
