Fatal collision on HWY 17, special investigations unit envokes mandate

ONTARIO (Ottawa) — Members of the Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently at the scene of a multiple vehicle collision on Highway 417 westbound, Ottawa, Ontario.

Preliminary investigation indicated that just before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday July 7, 2019, officers from the OPP and Ottawa Police Service were following a vehicle eastbound on Highway 417 as part of an investigation.

Due to safety concerns officers stopped. A short time later the vehicle was reported to be eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 417 and involved in multiple collisions.

Two people were pronounced deceased at the scene and two people were transported with life-threatening injuries.

An OPP East Region Collision Reconstructionist and Technical Collision Investigators are assisting with the investigation. Highway 417 westbound will remain closed for an extended period of time, while investigators are at the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing.

The OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) which has invoked its mandate. As a result the OPP will not be able to provide any further information. Any other inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.
