COBDEN — It’s been Whitewater Region Township’s practice to pass its yearly budget in June. With a recent motion to have department manager’s and requests for funding from various organizations in by the end of January, there’s hope the budget will be adopted sooner than by mid-year.
“Several requests for funding come in late April and May,” treasurer Annette Mantifel said at the June 11 council meeting.
While she has tried over the years to encourage those who request grants, and the department manager’s to get their budgets in earlier, her words have fallen on deaf ears.
“If this is a decision of council, it will be easier to enforce,” she explained prior to the motion being passed.
To ensure those who receive yearly grants are aware of this motion, Ms. Mantifel said a memo will be included with their cheques this year.
Councillor Allen Dick said he found it strange half a year would go by before a budget is approved.
“I believe we can be a lot more prudent about this kind of thing,” he said. “I could never understand how we could be half way through the year before the budget is approved.”
Reeve Don Rathwell said it never did make sense that half of the budget would be spent before it was even approved.
