Whitewater Region – There is to be no open flame burning in the Township of Whitewater Region.

Fire Chief Jonathan Wilker said firefighters were busy the past week, but nothing major. There was a small bush fire on Fletcher Road, a tanker overturned with the occupant getting himself out, and a burn complaint.

“The burn ban will stay on until we get a significant amount of rain,” Chief Wilker said.

This means no open flames of any type, whether it be for cooking or keeping warm, he said.

Barbecues can be used if they are gas or charcoal, he added.

Chief Wilker said no charges have been laid against those going against the burn ban.

“We’ll go out and give warnings and ask them to extinguish it,” he said.

It will be announced via the media and the township signs, website and facebook page when the burn ban is lifted, Chief Wilker said.
