WHITEWATER REGION — No fines were laid by the Whitewater Region fire department after being called out a couple of times in the past week during the county-wide fire ban.
“It’s not a nuisance,” said Fire Chief Jonathan Wilker.
Most people are aware of the ban and respect it, he said.
Whitewater Region Councillor Charlene Jackson feels those lighting fires during the well-advertised fire ban should be fined.
“I don’t feel very happy” that no fines were laid, she said.
At last Wednesday’s council meeting, she asked that fines be laid and if there is no bylaw for cost-recovery of the fire department responding, that one should be drawn up.
“I don’t think the ratepayers of Whitewater Region should be paying for the fire department to respond to fires that are set by ratepayers to enjoy a bon fire,” Coun. Jackson said Wednesday morning. “I think they should be held responsible themselves.
“It’s well known there’s a fire ban throughout the county. There’s no excuse.”
Coun. Jackson contacted the fire chief and Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay regarding this incident. It was explained to her that a charge is not laid at the scene because the issuance of a ticket requires backup and follow-up.
“My understanding (is) that the event on the weekend will result in a charge,” Coun. Jackson said.
