WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) – The tourist booth at Cobden Municipal Park will bear the name of Arthur B. Cobb.
It’s expected the unveiling of a plaque will coincide with opening weekend in May.
Former Whitewater Region chief administrative officer Dean Sauriol sent a letter to council in July 2017 asking that the building be named in Mr. Cobb’s honour, as he was instrumental in ensuring it ran smoothly and was taken care of for many, many years.
When the request came to council, there was no policy to name municipal facilites in honour of someone, and council directed staff to prepare a policy.
At last night’s council meeting, Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay advised the policy had been created and would be passed by bylaw at the meeting.
He noted the township will begin losing long-cherished volunteers and there will be requests that they be remembered with a facility named after them.
The process to do so will be simple, with the family giving approval once the request has come in from someone other than family. The request will be posted on the township’s website for 10 days to see if there is any public response, CAO Tremblay continued. There will then be discussion with the family to see what is written on the plaque.
With the final passing of the bylaw, and the recommendation that the tourist booth be named after Mr. Cobb, who had also been a long-time municipal councillor, the official unveiling will occur in May.
Councillor Cathy Regier said, This is a great honour for Art Cob. It’s great to see this brought forward.
