Former soldier Jack Baker found art to cope with his PTSD, and organized an art show at the Nook Creperie on Monday, August 22.

Seven artists showcased their paintings and artwork for sale in benefit for the Robbie Dean Center, a mental health and wellness clinic.

“I still struggle with it.” Baker said, who was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the military.

After retirement, he found that he suffered from insomnia, and he said painting was a “calming activity I could do while awake”.

He said that the event will hopefully raise money for the Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre.

His paintings were of photographs he took while in the military, he said.

He also said many of them are monocolour, as he is colourblind.

“I hope we can make this annual.” He said.

Monique Yashinskie, Executive Director of the Robbie Dean Centre, said Baker’s proposal was welcome.

“We receive no government funding.” she said. “The only way we stay open is through community support.”

“If even one person comes through these doors, it will be worth it.”

Frank Harper became an artist after retiring and moving to Canada, he said, and works with paint as well as carving cottonwood tree bark.

His paintings are abstract or landscape, and draw from his experience as a teacher of psychology.

Jessica Medeiras, another artist, said painting ‘helps her relax’, and is a friend of Baker’s who shares his passion.

“He and I are both passionate about mental health.” she said.
