The Council heard a recommendation that Council of the Township of Whitewater Region receive this report as it relates to the Ontario blue box program transition to full producer responsibility (2023 – 2025) and eligible sources of material.
Superintendent Hodson said that the commercial producers would be responsible for their own packaging, and that the municipality only covers the residential recycling.
“Under the regulation, they do not have to pick up commercial recycling.” he said.
He said there was an option to continue collecting commercial through a commercial responsible organization, who would bill the municipality for what is determined to be commercial recycling, or to leave commercial businesses to organize their own collection.
“What’s going to happen after we transition in 2026? It’s kind of unknown.” he said.
He said his recommendation was to “watch to see what happens.” with the muncipalities that will transition to the policy in 2023.
He said the Township was ‘ready to go July 2025’.
“Apparently we’re very worried about a carbon footprint, but we have all these trucks going around burning diesel with two trucks going around.” Councillor Chris Olmstead said.
He said that “we’re going to have our landfills fill right up, because businesses aren’t going to want to pay that extra money.”
“This is one we should watch really closely.”
The motion was carried.
