WESTMEATH — The YZone at the Westmeath Arena is the place to be Friday and Saturday evenings if you want some fun and some exercise without even knowing it.
Friday night is Flicker night. Flickers are three-wheeled self-propelled scooters. This event began in April and is becoming more popular, said Dana Thoms, who operates the canteen, aka Sweet Shack, with partner Stephen Racine at the arena. The program is part of the Westmeath District Recreation Association (WDRA).
“It’s for people six and up,” Ms. Thoms said. “We’ve even had 60-year-olds on them.”
Flicker night is from 6 to 9 p.m. and costs $5 for a half hour, which includes the flicker and helmet. The other option is $5 an hour if you bring your own flicker and helmet or $10 for the night.
On Saturday nights, it’s an opportunity to rollerskate, also from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $2 for 15 and under and $3 for those over. You need to bring your rollerskates and helmet, she said.
“This gets kids doing something when there’s not hockey,” Ms. Thoms said.
Both events will run until the ice goes back in, she said.
