WHITEWATER REGION (Beachburg) — Last night was an opportunity to try out this season’s NORCO mountain bikes courtesy of GearHeads out of Petawawa.
Mike and Margo Johnson were on hand to set up bikes and talk to various riders about the NORCO bikes.
The last Wednesday of each month, there is a mountain bike ride through the trail system behind Beachburg starting at the Riverside location of Whitewater Brewing Company.
The ride is lead by Cameron Dube, Cindy Jamieson and Greg Arminen, all of Beachburg.
There is at least one more opportunity for this ride in August. The cyclists ride the trail system from about 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Last night cyclists could pick out any of the bikes there for the demonstration, try it, and come back for a different bike, if they so chose, Mr. Johnson said.
“This is a way of promoting the trail system in the area, promote NORCO and promote GearHeads,” he said.
Owned by Damien and Tammy McCarthy, GearHeads have been in the area since 2006.
“Normally we do demo rides twice a year,” Mr. Johnson said. “We try to get out at the beginning of the year and showcase the new bikes of the season. But, the NORCO demo was delayed, so we’re having it mid-season.”
GearHeads employees who were at the event also set up bikes and offered cycling techniques.
“Bikes vary based on the geometry of the bike, the way it’s designed,” Mr. Johnson said. “The more slack, it’s for the more aggressive rider.”
There are also different sizes, ranging from 27.5 to 29 and then the tire size as well, he said. There are the extremely large tires of the fat bikes to the three inch mountain bike tires.
The next ride is Wednesday, Aug. 30. Contact Ms. Jamieson at Valley Cycle for more information.
