COBDEN — On June 29th, the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) hosted its first ‘Golf Fore Kids’ tournament at the Oaks of Cobden. A total of 64 golfers participated in the day-long event where golfers and non-golfers alike enjoyed lunch, dinner and prizes.
The end result showed $12,000 collected towards the Student Support Fund.
“To be able to enjoy the summer weather while raising money for an important cause is a perfect combination,” said RCDSB Chair Dave Shields. “I’m very happy with the total number of dollars raised. It highlights the generosity that citizens and businesses in Renfrew County have when it comes time to support causes in their community.”
‘Golf Fore Kids’ was established as a kick-off fundraiser for the new Student Support Fund (SFF) that the Board of Trustees endorsed this past winter. The mission of the SFF is to provide opportunities for RCDSB students in all our schools across the county by providing financial support.
As a registered charity, the SSF is managed by a committee of between five and seven members, including a combination of Board staff and community members. There is a minimum of one elementary and one secondary principal or vice-principal, one of which acts as the committee Chair. Committee members may serve two-year terms and the Chair may serve for two consecutive terms.
Donations from the public and businesses will be used to provide mini grants to schools who distribute them to students. By providing support to students that would normally face challenges due to financial constraints, the SSF is aimed at enhancing the educational outcomes of each student so that we can ultimately improve the health and well-being of each student.
These include, but are not limited to, costs associated with extra-curricular activities and trips, sports and music equipment and college and university application fees.
“Ultimately, I believe that this fund will ensure we have resources available so that students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate in activities, can do so,” concluded Shields.
It will be overseen by the RCDSB Fundraising Co-ordinator.
The Board is currently seeking a community member from the Arnprior area to sit on the Committee. Interested individuals should be active leaders in their communities and have strong skills in relationship building/fundraising/event planning.
