Whitewater Region firefighters battled this blaze near the intersection of McLaughlin and Sturgeon Mountain roads mid-morning on Tuesday, May 22. Fire Chief Jonathan Wilker said the fire is not suspicious, and while the call came in at 9:45 a.m., it’s believed the fire had been burning for quite some time. About 20 firefighters responded from Stations 1, 4 and 5 with everyone gone by noon. It was a large area with pine needles and lots of junk.
Chief Wilker noted there is currently no fire ban on and conditions are being monitored. He said no burning is to occur without a burn permit, which can be obtained at the township office in Cobden.
