PEMBROKE — At the May session of Renfrew County Council, Warden Peter Emon, along with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation Chief Kirby Whiteduck signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that creates a framework in which both parties will work together on key issues. Specifically, the MOU outlines key areas of common interest — infrastructure and economic development, training and business opportunities, and skills development. A united position on these issues works to the betterment of both Renfrew County and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
The next step is the establishment of a Working Group made up of designated representatives from the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and the County of Renfrew. The Working Group will be tasked to identify priority areas for collaboration and action, such as the CP rail to trail program, the extension of Highway 417, promotion of Algonquin training opportunities through Enterprise Renfrew County, co-operation to enhance business and economic development opportunities, and any other priorities as identified and agreed upon by the Working Group. In addition the Working Group will produce an on-going work plan that will include activities and actions that relate to the priority areas identified through collaboration.
Although the parties acknowledge that the MOU doesn’t create a legally enforceable or binding obligation, both parties have developed this MOU in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation for the benefit of all their residents.
Warden Peter Emon said, “By signing this document today, we enter into a new and exciting phase of our growing relationship with the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation. This collaboration will provide both parties with opportunities that will ensure the continued prosperity of all persons and will strengthen the ties between us.”
Chief Kirby Whiteduck stated, “The Chief and Council, on behalf of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, are very pleased to be signing this MOU with the County of Renfrew. We look forward to working more diligently with the County of Renfrew in the areas of economic development, employment and training. We are pleased to partner with our neighbours in these and other areas of mutual interest”.
