FORESTERS FALLS — The Whitewater Historical Society will continue to operate as it has for years past. A full slate of officers was acclaimed at last Friday afternoon’s annual general meeting.
Clare Stoppa is now president and Mac Coughlin is vice-president. The two were reversed for the past four years. Lawrie Barton is secretary and Allan Valliant is treasurer.
“It was the only way of resolving the problem,” said Mr. Coughlin.
The president’s position can be demanding, because there’s much to do, such as taking care of the payroll, supervising the summer student, contacting various people to help when needed and ensuring all is running smoothly, he said. He said it was a good meeting with about 15 people in attendance.
“We’re set to go for another year,” Mr. Coughlin said.
He said while there may not be many people interested in sitting on the executive or attending meetings, they are interested in volunteering. When the work of the past year was reviewed, it was amazing to see how many people came out and helped, he added.
“We had a lot of help and we appreciate it,” Mr. Coughlin said. “People like to help, they just don’t want the responsibility.”
There is still hope people from the outlying areas of the municipality will volunteer with the society, because it is the Whitewater Historical Society, he said. There is information compiled by Ms. Stoppa on churches, schools and now the railroad from throughout Whitewater Region, he said.
Mr. Coughlin noted the society applied for a grant for a summer student but has not yet heard if the application was approved.
Joanne Pratt, who takes care of the gardens, is hoping a 4-H horticultural club will start up and help with the gardens at the museum, he said. The meetings could be held at the log house, he added.
As for the summer events, Mr. Coughlin said a meeting will be held shortly to organize them.
