PEMBROKE — With Environment Canada forecasting temperatures in Renfrew County and District to reach highs near 30°C or hotter with humidity, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit is issuing a Hot Weather Health Warning.

Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Maureen Carew said, “Extreme heat and humidity increases the risk of heat related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can cause serious injury.”
She encourages everyone to be careful, especially those people who are more likely to be affected by extreme heat and humidity.

Older people, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses, disabilities or circulation problems need to be extra careful. Also outdoor workers, people taking part in outdoor sports and those without proper housing or transportation are at risk because of their increased exposure to the heat.

Heat illnesses are preventable. During extreme heat, the most important thing is to keep cool and hydrated. Here are some ways to stay cool and safe during this heat wave:

* Drink plenty of fluids, preferable water and limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol.
* Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors.
* Avoid direct exposure to the sun and look for shade. Spend time in an air-conditioned location such as a shopping mall, local library or community centre.
* Never leave children, older adults or pets unattended in a car, even with the windows open.
* Stay connected with people in your community who have a difficult time coping with hot weather and those who live alone. Check on them regularly.
