WESTMEATH — Five young farmers were in the area on an international exchange.
They are not only here to learn how we farm but also to explore what Ontario has to offer throughout May to August, noted Meredith Mulligan, president of the Renfrew County Junior Farmers.
She said they were in this area from June 21 to July 5. This area was the furthest north they would be going.
The junior farmers were Christina Poganitsch from Austria, Gillian Stewart of Scotland, Carolin Westerkamp of Germany, Lisa Walsh from Ireland and Beatrice Hadorn of Switzerland.
While here, they went on farm tours, worked on the host’s farm as well as others, spent Canada Day in Ottawa and went whitewater rafting.
“It also includes just hanging out together,” Ms. Mulligan said.
Hanging out included each member of the Renfrew County Junior Farmers hosting a meal while the visitors were here.
They also hosted a two-step square dance night at the Westmeath Arena, which was a joint venture with the Renfrew County 4-H groups.
Adrian Straathof of Westmeath is participating in the international exchange. He left for Wales yesterday (Wednesday, July 8) and will be returning at month’s end).
