The wetland at Muskrat Lake near the waste water plant will no longer be suffering from salt contamination from the road salt in Cobden.
This year, the township is not piling snow in the lot just below the waste water plant, but instead is trucking it to an empty lot at the municipal garage on Mineview Road.
By trucking the snow from Cobden to the garage, “we are addressing any potential concern with salt and debris going into the lake,” said Janet Collins, physical services manager for the township.
However, not all the snow from Cobden is being trucked to the new area, she said. When the banks are cleaned between the sidewalks and road, that’s the snow that will be trucked, she explained.
While there has been no formal request for this snow to be trucked, Ms. Collins said it’s been preferred that salt not go into the lake. She also noted that eventually that area will be used during the construction of the revamped waste water plant.
This is a best practice decision, Ms. Collins said.
