This marks my first issue of the Whitewater news and my reentry into the field of journalism after having dropped out of the entertainment and tech fields. I was born in Micksburg, between Pembroke and Cobden, and have lived here for most of my life.
You’ll probably notice some changes to your paper, but for the most part, I will be adhering to a lot of the guidelines and resources Megan set up before for the the near future.
That the previous editor left in part due to the racism she experienced in the Whitewater Region saddens me. It does not surprise me that these sentiments are prevalent here, as they are universally present in all areas of Canada. It should never happen, and for that to influence her decision to leave is unthinkable.
This summer is an arduous one for Whitewater county. The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted any summer plans we might have, and protests over police racial violence show little sign of stopping. As police releases make up a sizable body of our articles, I think.
However, many of us are adapting, myself included, and finding ways to maintain our lives while protecting our loved ones.
I look forward to writing for you.
