Dear Editor:
I read with interest your article on “Proposed changes to house league hockey could save rink, published in the Thursday, April 20 edition of Whitewater News.
I can fully understand the challenges faced by the executive in trying to keep three rinks functional and fielding house league hockey teams. I also understand that to do so requires some compromise.
My wife and I are fairly new to the area. We have no children or grandchildren playing in the league, however found it very enjoyable to get out and watch the Bulls of Beachburg and the Warriors of Westmeath play at every level from novice to midget. We did not go to the Cobden arena simply because we reside in the neutral territory of La Passe and the travel distance on a cold winter’s night is the same short distance in both directions (12 minutes to those rinks).
Now to my point — If the executive had an even split on whether to use the name Muskrat or Whitewater, why would they opt for Muskrat? To my knowledge, most, if not all the players no matter what village they live in, are a part of Whitewater Region. While Muskrat may have significance to many it does not to me.
I and my wife chose to make Whitewater Region our home and I believe that promotion of our Region as a whole should be capitalized on whenever possible. What better way than having our youth wear uniforms that proclaim the Whitewater (fill in the blank) are here as a united team — to play and win.
Just an old man’s opinion.
Mike Wendorf,
La Passe
