The three branches of the Whitewater Region Public Library are expanding their services to the community.
Along with providing reading materials and computers for people to use, they are now lending hubs for walking poles, both urban and activator.
Urban poles are cross-country skiing without the skis, which has toning, calorie-burning and posture benefits while activator poles are designed for balance and taking more pressure off your back and lower joints.
The poles can be borrowed, for two weeks at a time, from the Cobden, Foresters Falls and Beachburg branches, as long as a person is a card-carrying member of the Whitewater Region Public Library. The membership is free.
Each branch has one activator and three urban sets of poles to loan out. Those borrowing the poles can either train themselves how to use them with a pamphlet provided or can call the Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre (613-582-3685) and see if there is a trained leader who would be available for training.
Free museum passes are also available at each of the branches. The passes are good for two adults and up to four children to the Ontario Museum Network, which includes Bytown Museum, Billings Estate, Nepean Museum, Pinhey’s Point Historic Site, Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum and many more; and the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum.
The passes can be loaned out for two weeks.
The Whitewater Region Public Library is also planning on having a booth at this year’s Cobden’s Taste of the Valley, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 15. The trustees are hopeful the community will not only support the library’s table by purchasing some of their goodies, but also by providing some of the baked goods to be sold. More information on this event will be announced later.
