WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The Township of Whitewater Region is set to enact a by-law to adopt a Mail Box Policy to direct the installation, maintenance and replacement of mail boxes on municipal road allowances.

Each year, the Township receives numerous requests to replace mailboxes which have been damaged typically during winter operations. In order to mitigate the potential for damage and to reduce claims against the Municipality, staff have prepared a Mail Box Policy.

Mailboxes are generally damaged by snowplows from snow/ice coming off the plow, and from being physically struck by the plow. If snow or ice coming off the plow caused the damage to the mailbox, the owner will have to repair it. If the snowplows wing hits the mailbox causing damage, the Municipality will repair it.

A policy will help direct both owners and municipal staff in mitigating potential damage to mailboxes and determine responsibility, if damage does occur. A by-law adopting the policy will be brought forward for Council’s approval. The policy can be viewed on the Township website.
