WHITEWATER REGION (Foresters Falls) — It didn’t take long for a tandem load of logs to be cut, split and piled with 21 people at work.
Some of those 21 people were volunteering their time, while others are planning on going to Guatemala this November to build a home, possibly homes. And yet, there were others who hadn’t yet made up their minds, but decided to get in on the fun.
Even Mother Nature co-operated, holding off on the rain until the wood was done.
The trip is in November because that’s when the children in Guatemala are out of school.
Ted Richardson has been organizing the annual wood cutting bee for four years.
“The money raised is going towards the construction of a house in Guatemala,” he said.
He purchases the logs, takes out the price, and any profit goes to the fund, which is usually about $1,000, Mr. Richardson said.
“We need $1,800 American for a house,” he said.
This will be Mr. Richardson’s 14th trip to Guatemala. The first few years, he and other volunteers built furniture, then it was furniture and houses, and now it’s just houses.
He noted some people volunteer for just one year while others, like himself, go year after year.
