Matteo Lenzo accepts the Anne Leblanc Memorial Trophy from Sue White, chair of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee.

WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Matteo Lenzo was surprised to win an award at the Annual Ceremonial Review of 653 Champlain Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.

“I got the best first year male cadet award,” he said in his quiet voice.

The 13-year-old Cobden cadet received the Anne Leblanc Memorial Trophy from Sue White, chair of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee.

Looking back to a year ago, Matteo said his mom Carolyn showed him a Rick Mercer Report on air gliding and he decided that’s what he wants to do. He’s never looked back.

Each Tuesday for two-and-a-half hours, he attends air cadets in Renfrew and on some weekends, participates in training exercises.

Matteo enjoys the military drills, which include standing at attention, at ease and standing easy. He also has to keep his uniform in tip-top shape — and does this with the help of his mom.

“I’m working on the laundry stuff,” he said with a slight smile.

Two of the things Matteo has enjoyed learning is how to use a flight simulator and shoot an air rifle.

When asked why he thinks he received this award, Matteo said, “I showed up each Tuesday, I have a great attitude and I did the extra activities, like tag days and poppy sales.”

He said the award shows he has moved forward in his learning since beginning and that he’s committed to being an air cadet.

“The superior officers were watching me,” Matteo said.

“I’m surprised,” he said, adding, “I’m happy, shocked.”

Air Cadets is providing him with a great life experience with lots of opportunities, Matteo said.

“It’s fun and I’m meeting new people.”

This summer, Matteo is going to air cadet camp in Trenton for two weeks here he will participate in marksmanship and survival training.

While he’s not really following in family members’ footsteps, Matteo said his Great-Aunt June Humphries was in the airforce and his grandfather, Ted Humphries, was in the high school cadet program.

Mom Carolyn said this is a great life experience for her son and plenty of opportunities for growth. She sees the pride he has as he accomplishes various skills, such as marching and the various drill formations and learning leadership skills.

The end of the first year is coming to close, with the awards banquet on June 7.
