You heard correctly — there’s a new editor in town! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Megan Chase! I moved to Whitewater Region in December 2017 and fell in love with everything about this area, from the beautiful scenery and extensive wildlife to the close-knit communities and wonderful, friendly souls who inhabit them.
Before I get too far ahead of myself, let me say Connie Tabbert took me by complete suprise when she called me at 7:39 p.m. a week ago. She asked me if I wanted to take over the paper. I was instantly ignited with excitement, asked if she was serious and exclaimed, “YES PLEASE!”
I began my journalism career and became a small business owner in 2012. I studied journalism for four years at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario and launched an online news platform — twice. During this time, I graduated after an internship with Canadian Running Magazine and published a book on how to better your memory. I gained noterity as a fashion journalist and began traveling to attend fashion weeks and sitting front row at runway shows.
Amidst my success, something still felt like it was missing. It was not until I moved to Whitewater Region did the pieces fall into place. I met my soon-to-be husband, adopted three kittens through Whiskers of Whitewater and began learning the country way of life. Before this opportunity to be your editor came along, I founded a nonprofit here in Whitewater Region called Ottawa Valley Yoga. It’s still running but the focus has been put on our community programs as I embark on this venture.
Ottawa Valley Yoga is a way for me to give back to the community who has already given me so much. I have been running the nonprofit since September 4 of 2018.
When I met with Connie regarding my dream job in journalism, I could not contain my excitement and called my parents right away. I am incredibly excited and forever honoured to be carrying the torch and thank you, Connie, for passing the pen. I will do your legacy proud.
I believe journalism is about trust and accountability. I hope to learn from one another about what a newspaper is and what it can be. As the editor and journalists, we will strive to always keep you engaged and you, the readers, are free to engage with us!
