Melissa grew up in Eganville. Her parents Alison and Doug still live there and her grandmother Tory Hawkins lives in Cobden.
Melissa cruised to victory at the Canadian Track and Field Championship in women’s 800 metre with a time of two minutes 26 seconds. She was three-plus seconds ahead of silver medallist Jenna Westaway of Calgary.
She did fall short of her own Canadian record of 1:57.02, set on the way to a fourth place finish at the Rio Olympics last summer.
This is the first time in a long time Melissa has competed at home. There was a large cheering section just for her.
