COBDEN — The community showed its support of the new owners of Millar Feed and Seed by showing up in the hundreds at the open house a week ago.
There was opportunity to check out the various machinery the new company has, various crop plots, enjoy beef and pork on a bun with baked beans and salad, and talk with the various company representatives and companies who work with MacEwen Agricentre, who purchased Millar Feed and Seed.
Jim MacEwen, owner of the company, said when he heard the Millar brothers wanted to sell, he didn’t hesitate to let them know he was interested.
Terry and Rob Millar have owned the company for just over 33 years. With no family members who want to take it over, the decision to sell was made a lot easier.
Since Millar Feed and Seed is community-minded, Mr. MacEwen said it fit right in the way he likes to do business.
With more farmers going cash crop, Mr. MacEwen said his company will be a one stop shop for them, with a good variety of seeds and machinery to help with the crop.
Merging the two businesses is a part of growth of the company, he said.
“Our company feels you need to grow in this business,” Mr. MacEwen said Thursday, as he took a break from socializing at the open house.
Mr. MacEwen felt the open house was an opportunity to meet the current customers of Millar and Feed and Seed.
“This was a great opportunity to meet Terry’s clientele and we can get to know each other,” he said. “I wanted to give Terry’s customers the opportunity to see they will still get a great level of service and commitment.
“It’s important people undertstand who we are.”
He began MacEwen Agricentre in October 1983. He noted Millar Feed and Seed will remain the name of the local business, but it will fly under the colours of MacEwen, which many people are familiar with.
