The Council of the Township of Whitewater Region approved the write off of taxes for the four properties owned by the Ministry of Northern Development & Mines.

Treasurer Crozier reported that “I’ve had this thorn in my side” with the Tomminco mines properties that prevented them from being divested from the Township.

He said that due to the arrears, and no taxes paid since 2012,

“Council can essentially write off the taxes under my recommendation, because it’s owned by a crown corporation, 460,000.”

“If Council approves to do this, it will be a 60,000 hit of revenue, but if we don’t do this going forward, it will be a huge hit in taxes sitting there.”

Councillor Nicholson asked what specific taxes they were writing off.

Crozier clarified that this was “just the taxes owing” for the properties.

Councillor Mackay asked if this would “square” the financial obligations for the mines.

“I would say we’re keeping it.” Crozier said.

Councillor Mackay asked if the properties were owned by the Township.

Crozier said they were owned by a Crown Corporation, but that the Township would not be taxed for it.

The motion was carried.
