BEACHBURG – Zion Line from Beachburg Road to Sturgeon Mountain Road was closed for almost 11 hours on Monday, May 30 following a rollover of a box truck with chemicals.
The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP report that just before 11 a.m. on Monday, officers responded to a single vehicle roll over on Zion Line.
The investigation revealed that a northbound box truck on Zion Line carrying chlorine, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid left the roadway and rolled over onto its side into the ditch. The driver was not injured and exited the vehicle safely. A hydro pole was struck and damaged.
A southbound propane delivery truck made contact with the hydro wires that were across the road. Hydro One attended to remove the wires. The propane delivery truck driver was not injured.
There is no evidence at this time of any chemical spill, said the OPP at the time.
Whitewater Region Fire Chief Wayne Heubner said there was a minuscule amount of chemical spilled from the McLaren truck.
“There wasn’t much of a spill,” he said Wednesday. “You couldn’t even see it.”
Drain-All Ltd. of Anrprior responded to the emergency call to remove the chemicals in the truck, the chief said. Once the chemicals were safely removed, then the truck could be towed out of the ditch, he added.
The Beachburg, Cobden and Westmeath fire stations responded to the call, along with Hydro One and the Renfrew County paramedics. Chief Heubner said Cobden firefighters remained on scene until the township roads department arrived to put up the road closure signs.
Zion Line opened up around 10 p.m., the chief said.
