FORESTERS FALLS — Well, it was an interesting Canada Day to say the least!

It started off with another great parade. The streets of Foresters Falls were lined with spectators. At the completion of the parade at the ball diamond the barbequers had the food ready and waiting. Canada Day was officially opened with Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski leading in the singing of O’Canada.

Cricket’s Canine Country Club, from near Beachburg, put on an amazing dog agility demonstration on the ball diamond and the children were running around playing Laser Tag and croquette.

All was going well. We were under a fire ban which meant no fireworks unless we got some more rain. We worked closely with the fire department and fire chief to monitor this and try our best to make the show go on. Sure enough the rain started and put a halt to all events. It looked like it would pass in a short time though.

The band, Mine Road, started playing to keep the crowd entertained. At 7 p.m. we received the go-ahead from Fire Chief Wayne Heubner to have the fireworks (Yay!). However after that the rain picked up, there was threats of funnel clouds and the rain never really let off. Yes we really, really needed rain – just not at that time.

Anyway, as the rain kept up the crowds slowly left and it was apparent that it was not going to yield and the decision was made to cancel the fireworks.

Congratulations to our Canada Day winners:

50/50 — Irma Johnston
Best Decorated Home – Betty and Dale Black. They received the Olmstead’s Home Hardware gift certificate. The Hywatt Family was runner-up.
Jelly Bean Guess — Rhett Black with a guess of 900. The actual number was 910.
Cake Contest — John Procher; Sam Hyatt; Ally Sharma

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in this year’s Canada Day – the parade, all of the spectators who came out and of course all of the volunteers who helped put this event together.

We look forward to making Canada’s 150th a special one next year!
