ONTARIO (Ottawa) — Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Cheryl Gallant, rose during Question Period on January 29 to ask the Prime Minister why his government is fighting lawsuits from veterans but settles lawsuits with confessed terrorists.

Cheryl Gallant said, “Mr. Speaker, this government claimed it just had to give Omar Khadr $10 million to save money on legal fees. This government also claimed it would not take veterans to court. But they are fighting Canadian Veteran Sean Bruyea in court. Now we’ve learned they have spent over seven times what he is seeking in damages. Why does this Prime Minister treat captured Al-Qaeda bomb-makers better than Canadian veterans?”

The Right Hon. Justin Trudeau said, “Mr. Speaker, over the past five years, we have reversed the shameful legacy of Conservative attacks on veterans. They cut over 1,000 jobs from veterans serving Canada and shuttered nine Veterans Affairs office. Over the past years, we have invested in supports for our veterans and for their families, making sure they have the tools they need to lead fulfilled and successful lives in Canada after their military service. We thank them deeply for their service and will continue to invest in the things they need, unlike what the Conservative government did before.”
