BEACHBURG — A red tagged furnace means bad news for the parishioners of St. Augustine’s Anglican Church in Beachburg.
“It’s gone to the big furnace in the sky,” said parishioner Phil Cottrell.
It means there is a need to find funds to purchase a new heating system, he said, adding with a laugh, “Body heat only goes so far.”
Mr.Cottrell has now helped organize a Keep the Fires Burning Music Night Fundraiser. The event is at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 at the church on Beachburg Road near LaPasse Road.
The furnace was purchased new in the early 1990s, Mr. Cottrell said. The idea now is to remove the furnace and hook up to natural gas. However, that will cost about $6,000, he figures.
“We are pinning our homes on raising the funds at the music night, or at least a good chunk of them,” Mr. Cottrell said.
The focus on the music night is local talent, he said. There are soloists and choirs from throughout the area.
“It’s been heart-warming to receive the response we have,” Mr. Cottrell said. “It’s not a service, it’s more like a musical ecumenical event. It’s amazing how many other denominations are helping.”
While the church may not be big, which is where the event will be held, he figures the people will be packed in. It could be those performing will have to be in the basement until they perform, he said.
There will be a quilt draw and refreshments will be served following the event.
Mr. Cottrell expects the event to last about one to one-and-a-quarter hours.
