NECKLACE STOLEN
RENFREW — The Renfrew Detachment of the OPP is investigating the theft of a necklace and cash from an unlocked vehicle in Renfrew.
The unlocked car was in a private driveway on Renfrew Avenue East sometime overnight between Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18. The thief went through the car and stole a necklace and $80 cash from a Father’s Day card and a purse. The necklace is described as a Sopata necklace, heavy, white glass beads on black velvet. This necklace is value is at $325.
OPP RESPONSE PREVENTS AFTER-PROM BUSH PARTY IN LAURENTIAN HILLS
LAURENTIAN HILLS – – On the evening of Saturday, June 10, officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment received information from the public regarding an after-prom bush party set to take place on Laurentian Hills municipally owned land on Leader Road.
Officers responded and found approximately 20 to 30 tents set up on the land in anticipation of the party and a large area for a bonfire had already been prepared. Two vehicle loads of youths were already on scene at the time of police arrival. The youths were warned for offences under the Liquor License Act (LLA) and sent home with a designated driver.
Police then set up a RIDE program on Leader Road from 930 p.m. until midnight. Officers turned away dozens and dozens of vehicles, including a bus, full of youths enroute to the party.
Detachment Commander Mark Wolfe praised the work of the responding officers and stated, “Events such as this pose a serious risk to the safety and well-being of our youth. The officer’s timely actions to prevent the party from taking place demonstrates our commitment to public safety and the safety of our youth.”
Domestic Violence
Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated seven domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with assault. No other criminal offences took place.
Break and Enter
On Friday, June 16 OPP officers investigated the break and enter at the dining hall on the Renfrew Fair Grounds property. A screen door and metal door were damaged, and a stove inside the kitchen was damaged. The break-in took place sometime overnight Thursday June 15. Provincial Constable (PC) Sarah Darraugh is leading the investigation. Police have increased their patrols of the Renfrew Fairgrounds property. Lock it or Lose it
Renfrew OPP officers continue to investigate numerous thefts from unlocked vehicles. This crime is easily prevented — by locking your vehicle. Even more importantly please remove valuables from your vehicle when it is unattended.
Stolen items this week were predominantly wallets. Also stolen were trail cameras, binoculars, a laptop computer, a Vortex Sidewinder laser measuring tape, a purse, a black Air Canada duffle bag containing running shoes and gym clothes, cell phones, a laptop computer bag containing school work and a wallet. Some of the stolen identification and papers were recovered in a garbage can at Ma-te-Way Park in Renfrew, and scattered along the Millennial Trail.
Stunt Driver
On Wednesday, June 14 at approximately 7:30 a.m., PC Denys Baranovskiy stopped a vehicle on Highway 17 in McNab Braeside Township for speeding. The vehicle was traveling more than 50 km above the posted speed limit of 100 km/hr. Maureen Connell, 40, of Arnprior, was issued a summons for court in Renfrew on July 21. Her licence was automatically suspended for 7 days and her vehicle was impounded for 7 days.
Impaired Driver
On Wednesday, June 14 at approximately 7:20 p.m., PC Chris Colton responded to a report of a possible impaired driver on Highway 17 in Whitewater Region Township. He located the suspect vehicle in a parking lot on Highway 17 in Cobden. The male driver was arrested for impaired driving. After refusing to provide samples of his breath, Mark Duquette, 50, of St. Malachie D’Ormstown, QC, was charged with impaired driving, resisting arrest and refusing to provide a sample of his breath. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on July 19.
Fraud
One victim has come forward to report being defrauded by a scammer pretending to be with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The scammer advised the victim was in trouble and to purchase prepaid Steam Gift Cards or the victim would be arrested. These cards work just like a gift certificate which can be redeemed on Steam for the purchase of games, software, wallet credit, and any other item you can purchase on Steam. The CRA does not operate in this manner.
